Jana lives in Tbilisi with her teenage daughter Elene. To ensure her daughter grows up without lacking family warmth — after a period when they both lived on the streets — but also to keep their relationship filled with love, Jana decides to rent out her body and health for the future of her daughter by becoming a surrogate. The gray zone of the surrogacy business pushes Jana into dangerous territory, where her body is at risk. Initially, she tries to hide her pregnancy from Elene, but the girl gradually senses that something is going on. Through a long observation, the film tells the intimate story of a mother and daughter’s close bond.
The film is in Georgian with Latvian and English subtitles.
Director: Ketevan Vashagashvili
Georgia is a popular international destination for surrogacy services — currently one of the few countries in the world where surrogacy is still available to foreigners. However, with growing risks to surrogate mothers’ health and debates over ethical issues, the Georgian government has announced plans to soon restrict surrogacy services for foreign clients.
